Teaching While White - August 21, 2024 - 9:00AM - 3:30 PM
Banchetti's by Rizzo 550 North French Rd, Amherst, New York 14228
Register HERE
This workshop is designed for white teachers and administrators who understand that race matters, but who still feel uncomfortable engaging in racial topics, especially across racial differences.
To better understand our own perspective, we will explore what it means to be "white" and how our identity impacts our work. We will discuss why being "colorblind" is not a solution, what language is appropriate to use, how stereotypes influence everyone, and how we can be more conscious of our own biases.
We will practice how to interrupt racially stressful situations and how to manage white guilt, shame, and paralysis in the face of racist comments or behavior. We will identify how white fragility operates and ways to challenge it via pedagogy, content, and assessment practices.
Participants will leave the workshop with a deeper understanding of allyship as an action and with strategies to support healthy, antiracist teaching/learning environments.
Who should attend: Teachers, Professors & Educators from all subject areas and grade levels Elementary through College
Note: All participants will receive a copy of Learning and Teaching While White: Antiracist Strategies for School Communities (Routledge, 2023)

This workshop is designed for white educators in leadership roles. We will share frameworks and resources to create a space for reflection, critical feedback, and practice of our antiracist leadership skills.
Together we will address the following questions:
• How can we best support and supervise directors of diversity or other leadership positions across race? How do we model cross-racial solidarity?
• How can we cultivate board members who will support equity initiatives and policies?
• What are strategies for engaging parent associations and other school committees to support racial equity efforts?
• How do we best navigate resistance to racial equity?
• How do we make sure we don’t become complacent in our own growth and development?
Who should attend: Leaders in Education from all grade levels Elementary through College
Note: All participants will receive a copy of Learning and Teaching While White: Antiracist Strategies for School Communities (Routledge, 2023)
